Survey shows UK construction industry on the rise - Construction ...

A survey for July has shown that the construction industry in the UK has reached its highest level of activity since June 2012.

The survey by financial advisers Markit and the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply shows the sector was boosted by a continuing surge in house building.

The Markit/CIPS Construction Purchasing Managers' Index rose to 57.0 in July from 51.0 the month before, with any figure above 50 indicating expansion.

Tim Moore, Senior Economist at Markit and author of the survey said: ?July?s survey highlights a new wave of optimism across the UK construction sector, with companies reporting a pace of expansion in excess of anything seen over the past three years.

?The swing back to output growth broadened to include commercial and civil engineering activity during July, although housing construction remains the one thing crucial to the sector?s strong upturn at present.

?Construction firms saw the fastest improvement in new orders for over a year, which helped kick-start job creation and input buying growth during July.

?A switch to sharply rising purchasing activity may have caught some suppliers by surprise, as delivery times lengthened to the greatest degree in over seven years.?

The construction sector has been an area of weakness in the UK economy.

The sector is still more than 16.5 percent lower than it was before the start of the financial crisis in 2008, despite this growth.

David Noble, Chief Executive Officer at the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply, said: ?Homes are the beating heart of this rapid recovery in the construction sector, backed by a solid expansion in civil engineering and commercial activity.

?Better economic conditions, a jump in new business activity and the strongest level of confidence since the era of austerity began in 2010, strongly suggest this growth can be sustained into Q3.

?This rising confidence goes hand in hand with increasing output, underpinned by the expansion in new business orders, which was the steepest since April 2012. As a result, firms are starting to believe this is the real deal for the recovery, demonstrated by the strongest pace of job creation since December 2011.

?One constraint on the sector is the pressure on suppliers to meet the sharp rise in demand. Suppliers have been surprised by the speed and scale of the revival leading to lengthy delivery times.?

Windows User Folder Permissions (Dual Boot)

Been a while since I done this, but remember something about taking ownership of the files. You can go into advanced on the permissions window, click change permissions, and then assign permissions to whomever you want. System, and yourself and some other default accounts are a good idea.

Look at Goodbytes reply also regarding encryption.

EDIT: Pretty sure you have to do all this from Win 8 side, and not Win 7 side. Win 7 doesn't know about your Win 8, so a user created, even if it matched, means nothing since that is not how permissions are handled. Names are mostly for your personal reading pleasures Go into Win 8 and add yourself some permissions. Might get blocked, but I remember there is a way, and it wasn't very complicated.

Worst case you can use built in PowerShell in Windows 8 to manual create your own permissions and tell Win protection to go **** itself Oo

How to Install Loft Insulation Yourself

If you opt for blanket loft insulation, which is the most popular kind, then you should have no problem installing it yourself even if you have little or no DIY experience. There is no need to pay for a professional contractor to come round to do the job for you. However, there are some potential hazards and it is important to prepare yourself appropriately and take all of the necessary precautions to ensure that you do the job properly while staying safe. The following guide will walk you through the process of installing blanket loft insulation.

    Preparations to Make

Follow the steps below to plan and prepare for your loft insulation project.

? Determine the amount of insulation your loft is going to need. A single roll of blanket insulation should cover just under fourteen square meters. A typical two-bedroom terrace house, for example, will need about four rolls in total while a three-bedroom detached house will need at least eight. These are only guidelines, however. It is still important to accurately measure the surface area of the loft to avoid buying too much material. The recommended depth of insulation is 270mm, so if you are topping up existing installation, you should not need so much or you can buy thinner rolls. You should also determine the width of the spaces between the joists.

? Determine the size of the hatch leading into your loft space to make sure that you will be able to fit the rolls of insulation through it.

? Thoroughly clear out the loft. You will need a clean and organized space to work with when it comes to making further preparations and installing the insulation.

? Lag any cold water pipes. Once you have insulated your loft, the space above the insulation will be much cooler. If there are any cold water pipes in this area, they may freeze during particularly cold weather. To make sure that this doesn't happen you should lag them with an adequate amount of insulation material. If the cold water tank is in the roof space, you should ensure that this is properly insulated as well. You can purchase a special insulative jacket to place over any standard-sized water tank.

    Installing the Insulation

Follow the steps below to safely and properly install the rolls of insulation.

? Get something to walk on such as some heavy boards or planks lest you risk damaging the ceiling while installing the rolls of insulation.

? Wear suitable clothing which fully covers your arms and legs. You will also need a dust mask, a pair of goggles and some gloves. These precautions are necessary if the insulative materials consist of things such as mineral fibre or glass wool as they are highly irritant when working with them for an extended period. If you are using material made from sheep's wool, you will not need to take these precautions.

? Start unravelling the first roll of insulation at the far end of your loft. You will need to cut it to fit in some case. For this, you will need either a sharp knife or a large pair of scissors. When laying out the insulation, be sure to leave a couple of centimetres between the edge of the material and the eaves as this will help to promote airflow and prevent damp.

? Place a second layer of insulation if you want it to be more effective. If you place a second layer, then lay it the other way around so that it covers the joists.

? Attach some insulation material to the back of the loft hatch. Many people forget about this and wonder why their loft insulation is less effective than it should be. Simply nail or tape some of the material onto the hatch.
    Some Additional Safety Tips:

? Keep the insulation material comfortably far away from any lighting fixtures or chimney stacks. This will help to decrease fire risk.

? Avoid putting insulation underneath any cold water tank that you might have in your attic. Instead, fold up the insulation material around it and use a tank jacket.

Apple patents a three-sensor camera for the iPhone and iPad

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted Apple a new patent that indicates the tech giant may be developing a new camera for the iPhone and iPad that uses three separate sensors, each with their own lens.

The US patent No. 8,497,897 is for "Image capture using luminance and chrominance sensors" on mobile devices.

The system would use two chrominance sensors and one luminous sensor with a lens sitting in front, allowing the capture of three separate images that collect colour, light and other data.

The raw data can then be combined to create a higher quality composite image, which would be particularly handy for photos taken in low-light.

    That camera effect

Though we probably won't be seeing the new camera tech in any upcoming iPhones this year, smartphone camera quality seems to be the new "go to" frontier for device dominance, what with Nokia claiming that its Lumia 1020 is "the first smartphone to put the camera first" and Samsung releasing the Galaxy S4 Zoom.

The focus on cameras in smartphones has been around for ages, only increasing because of apps like Instagram, Snapchat and Vine, so this new patent could be a boom for Apple as it faces dropping market share.

But while the USPTO granted this camera patent to Apple, it also invalidated Apple's "pinch-to-zoom" patent earlier this week, which could cause more troubles for the tech giant in its court cases against Samsung.

Defending 4A champ falls in baseball

The first round is complete at the state high school baseball tournament and there will be a new champion in class 4A. Clinton jumped out to an early 8-0 lead then held off a furious rally by top ranked and defending champion Ankeny 10-8.

Chino Alcala?s two out single in the bottom of the ninth inning brought in the winning run as third ranked Des Moines East beat Davenport North 7-6. ?I was looking for an away curveball and he threw me a fastball and I just got out on it and hit it opposite field,? Alcala explains.

Davenport North tried to take the lead twice by attempting a double steal but both times had runner thrown out at the plate. Wildcats coach Cory Wachal says they had opportunities, but East made the plays they needed.

Dom Thompson-Williams drove in the lone run of the game and the Sioux City East Black Raiders scraped out a 1-0 victory over the 10th-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier.

As the subject indicates, I also have a possible WTB. It's a bit of an odd request, however. I've come into a 27" iMac that at the very least has a dead PSU. I'm mostly prepared to just move on because I really just want the panel (which I know works) for a little project. But I still can't help but wonder if it is indeed just the PSU. Anyways, I'd rather not drop $100+ only to find out it's logic board. So if anyone has one lying around for free or on the cheap, I'm looking for one. I can provide exact model number if need be, but I'm not at home at the moment.

Also interested in any Intel Thin micro-atx boards and possibly a stock SSD for a 2012 Macbook Air.

Nuptials at midnight as gay marriage hits Minn.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? Dozens of Minnesota gay couples made last-minute preparations Wednesday for midnight marriages, determined to exchange vows at the earliest possible moment under a new state law legalizing same-sex marriage.

Weddings were scheduled to start at the stroke of midnight at Minneapolis City Hall, St. Paul's Como Park, Mall of America's Chapel of Love and at county courthouses around the state. One group planned a cluster of weddings in a Duluth tavern.

"I don't think either of us ever thought we'd see this day," said Mike Bolin, of the Minneapolis suburb of Richfield, who was marrying Jay Resch, his partner of six years, at Minneapolis City Hall. "We met at low points in both of our lives, and to have arrived at this point ? there's going to be a lot of tears."

Rhode Island was joining Minnesota on Thursday in becoming the 12th and 13th U.S. states to allow gay marriage, along with the District of Columbia. The national gay rights group Freedom to Marry estimates that about 30 percent of the U.S. population now lives in places where gay marriage is legal. The first gay weddings in Rhode Island were planned for later Thursday morning.

In Minnesota, budget officials assessing the impact of the law estimated that about 5,000 gay couples would marry in the first year. Its enactment capped a fast turnabout on the issue in just over two years. After voters rejected a constitutional ban on gay marriage last fall, the state Legislature this spring moved to make it legal.

Rhode Island becomes the last New England state to allow same-sex marriage. Lawmakers in the heavily Catholic state passed the marriage law this spring, after more than 16 years of efforts by same-sex marriage supporters. Both Minnesota and Rhode Island will automatically recognize marriages performed in other states.

Bolin and Resch celebrated Wednesday night with several hundred others at Wilde Roast Cafe along the Mississippi River north of downtown Minneapolis. Many at the event planned to walk to City Hall for the mass nuptials.

Dayton proclaimed Aug. 1 to be "Freedom to Marry Day" in Minnesota. The governor was to be on hand at Minneapolis City Hall for the ceremonies starting at midnight, where Mayor R.T. Rybak planned to perform 42 marriages by 6 a.m.

Golden Valley-based General Mills Inc. donated Betty Crocker cakes for the event, which was also to feature performances by local musicians and services donated by wedding photographers, florists and other businesses.

Weddings were not limited to the Twin Cities. In St. Cloud, Stearns County court administrator Tim Roberts planned to marry a couple at 12:01 a.m. at the courthouse. "It feels historic. It's an honor to be a part of it," Roberts said. Midnight weddings were also planned for courthouses in Clay County, Polk County and elsewhere.

At Mall of America, Holli Bartelt and Amy Petrich from the southeastern Minnesota town of Wykoff were set to become the first couple married at the Chapel of Love. Owner Felicia Glass-Wilcox said she hoped to start the ceremony a few minutes early, so the vows could be pronounced seconds after midnight.

"We'd like for them to be able to say they are the very first married in the state, but for sure they'll be able to say they're one of the first," Glass-Wilcox said. She said the chapel had four more gay couples booked for weddings in the next five days.

Bartelt, 33, proposed to Petrich, 37, in April in a photo booth at the Bloomington mall. It was a few weeks before the Legislature approved the law, but Bartelt said she was confident by then that it would pass. She had been in contact with a mall employee about the proposal, who later suggested the couple could be first to get married at the chapel.

Bartelt, a health coach, planned to wear an ivory-colored dress, while Petrich, a baker for Mayo Clinic, was wearing an ivory suit. A group of about 50 family members and close friends were planning to join them, including Bartelt's 10-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter.

"Everybody deserves the right to be happy," said Bartelt. "That's really what it's all about. It's a big day for us, and a big day for Minnesota, and something I hope my kids look back on some day and say, 'Wow, we got to be part of that.'"

Denzel Washington Discusses ?2 Guns,? Confirms ?A Raisin in the Sun?

The New York premiere of director Baltasar Kormakur?s new film ?2 Guns? brought stars Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg to the SVA Theatre Monday evening before it hits theaters Friday.

Speakeasy caught up with Washington before the screening. The actor, who was recently nominated for an Academy Award for his dramatic role in ?Flight,? said switching to comedy was easy to do with Wahlberg by his side. ?Mark is hilarious and an amazing actor,? he said. ?And yeah it?s a comedy, but it?s still just acting, so I think I handled the transition pretty well.?

Washington, who won a Tony Award in 2010 for his performance in the Broadway revival of ?Fences,? confirmed he will perform in a new Broadway revival of ?A Raisin in the Sun.?

Wahlberg, who is currently filming ?Transformers 4? and will soon start ?Ted 2,? said working with Washington was an incredible experience, and said? his co-star was a natural at the comedy in the film. ?The movie is definitely a little bit different for him, but it?s Denzel ? he caught on quickly,? Wahlberg said.

Despite the movie?s lighter plot, the actor said that the overall tone of the set was quite serious. ?I like to save my pranks, like burying people in sand, for my friends,? he said.

?Yeah, I just like to keep it professional,? Washington agreed. ?But that doesn?t mean we didn?t have a great time filming.?

Washington said the film?s bull scene was his most memorable moment on set ? and for Kormakur, directing it wasn?t half bad.

?I think in that moment, as a director, I was like I have Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg tied up by their feet with a live bull in the scene, how did I get to this point in my career?? the director said.

Other actors in the film, such as James Marsden, have more painful set memories, like when he learned that sometimes you?ve just got to roll with the punches, literally.

?Yeah you don?t get in the way of Mark?s fist,? he said. ?I learned that firsthand while filming a few times.?

Some are already discussing a sequel. Ross Richie, founder of Boom! Studios, which published the original comic book version of ?2 Guns? in 2006, said the comic-book sequel, aptly named ?3 Guns?, is due out next Wednesday.

?So for the next movie the real question would be who is the third gun?? Richie said. ?Or better yet, who is she??

Alongside the all-star cast, which features Paula Patton, James Marsden, Robert John Burke, Edward James Olmos and Bill Paxton, other guests included Robin Thicke and Curtis James Jackson, better known as 50 Cent.

CDN-NDG borough mayor joining Team Denis Coderre

Cote des Neiges/Notre Dame de Grace borough mayor Lionel Perez is joining Team Denis Coderre.

Perez, who has been interim borough mayor since Nov. 27, 2012, had been a member of Union Montreal before that party collapsed.

"I stand by my record both as an elected official, both at city hall and as borough mayor for the past several month," said Perez.

He took over the borough mayor position from Michael Applebaum, who gave it up to become the interim mayor of Montreal -- a position he resigned in June when he was charged with conspiracy and fraud.

Perez said he is acutely aware of the spotlight on the CDN-NDG borough ever since, but said it's important to to judge people because of the alleged actions of their former associates.

"We have to evaluate individuals on their merits."

This November Perez will run to retain the seat he was originally elected for, representing the district of Darlington as a city councillor.

Coderre announced his mayoral bid in May and has been slowly building a team of candidates to run in the for the 105 city and borough councillor positions in Montreal. With the addition of Perez to his team he now has 19 running mates.

Cyclospora mystery continues in North Texas

    Updated yesterday at 10:43 PM

DALLAS ? There are new clues about the source of a food-borne illness that just keeps spreading.

In North Texas, health officials have not yet narrowed down the source of the cyclospora outbreak, even though officials in Iowa and Nebraska point to bagged salad being the culprit.

The cyclospora parasite is typically found in produce.

More than 370 people are sick in fifteen states, including 122 in Texas. Most of those cases are in Collin, Tarrant, Denton and Dallas counties.

The salad mix of iceberg and romaine lettuce, cabbage and carrots is sold under multiple brands, but those brands are not yet being identified by health officials.

Health officials have not determined the source of the Texas outbreak, but they are following leads, looking at each case to find a common link.

A North Texas woman who asked not to be identified said one of her relatives tested positive for the stomach bug. That person has been sick for weeks with diarrhea, fatigue and stomach cramps.

"I see the anguish and the pain that she's had to go through with all the different symptoms and doctor's appointments and doctor's visits and having to drop off things and wait for results," she said. "I would really just like to see that there's an answer."

The mission now: Identify where the product was distributed, and where it became contaminated.

Prepackaged salad is triple-washed, so experts believe it could have been contaminated in a wash or from a problem with field irrigation water.

Dallas County health officials told News 8 that even though the source of the Texas cyclospora outbreak has not been determined, the revelation in Iowa and Nebraska could help their investigation.

If you or someone you know has suffered longer than a week with severe stomach cramps, nausea, acute diarrhea and vomiting, see a health professional and ask to be tested specifically for cyclospora. Don't wait to get help.

    Prepare to Be Shocked!

130729_$BOX_OneWeirdTrickBelly So ... do the "1 trick" ads really work?

    Ad screengrab

You?ve seen them. Peeking out from sidebars, jiggling and wiggling for your attention, popping up where you most expect them: those ?One Weird Trick? ads. These crudely drawn Web advertisements promise easy tricks to reduce your belly fat, learn a new language, and boost your credit score by 217 points. They seem like obvious scams, but part of me has always wanted to follow the link. What, I wonder, makes the tricks so weird? How come only one trick, never more? Why are the illustrations done by small children using MS Paint? I?ve never pursued these questions, though, because a fear of computer viruses and identity theft has always stayed my hand. One curious click, I imagine, and I could wake up hogtied on an oil tanker headed to Nigeria.

Thankfully, Slate has allowed me to slake my curiosity, and yours. They gave me a loaner laptop, a prepaid debit card, and a quest: to investigate these weird tricks and report back to you. I also contacted a bevy of marketing experts to help me parse what I found. The individual tricks themselves are peculiar, but the larger trick?of why this bizarre and omnipresent marketing strategy works?tells us a lot about what makes us click, buy, and believe.

Newly emboldened, I clicked on my first ad, which promised a cure for diabetes. Specifically, I hoped to ?discover how 1 weird spice reverses diabetes in 30 short days.? The ad showed a picture of cinnamon buns. Could the spice be... cinnamon? Maybe I would find out. The link brought up a video with no pause button or status bar. A kindly voice began: ?Prepare to be shocked.? I prepared myself. As ?Lon? spoke, his words flashed simultaneously on the screen, PowerPoint-style.?As soon as he started, Lon seemed fixated on convincing me to stay until the end. ?This could be the most important video you ever watch,? he promised. ?Watch the entire video, as the end will surprise you!?

Every time Lon seemed about to get to the spicy heart of the matter, he?d go off on a tangent. This video wouldn?t stay on the Internet for long, he said. The cure is for people ?ready to put down the flaky answers.? Indeed, ?if you?re looking for a miracle cure or new age fad, leave this page now.? Lon also took pains to trash the medical establishment. Big Pharma has been lying to you, he said. They profit every time you take their pills, or inject yourself with their needles. But the secret spice Lon discovered can free you of the lies and the needles. You will ?look and feel like you were never sick.? Your doctor will confirm your cure, astounded.

What is Lon up to? ?People tend to think something is important if it?s secret,? says Michael Norton, a marketing professor at Harvard Business School. ?Studies find that we give greater credence to information if we?ve been told it was once ?classified.? Ads like this often purport to be the work of one man, telling you something ?they? don?t want you to know.? The knocks on Big Pharma not only offered a tempting needle-free fantasy; they also had a whiff of secret knowledge, bolstering the ad?s credibility.

It?s doubtful, though, that Lon has much in the way of insider info. He?s an actor hired by Barton Publishing, a firm based in South Dakota that puts out a wide variety of crankish health literature?there?s nary a foodstuff that isn?t the cure to some ailment in one of Barton?s booklets. Most ?one weird trick? ads are hard to trace back to a specific marketing firm with flesh-and-blood employees, but Barton is open about the kind of publishing it does, with pictures and bios of their contributors on its website. (Notably, the first person listed is not a homeopath but a ?split tester.?)

The Barton brain trust seemed surprisingly sincere, which I kept in mind as I turned to my next ad. I clicked to learn ?the REAL reason why Obama is trying to take your guns away.? You?d think health quackery and gun paranoia would have little in common, but soon I was brought to a page with a self-playing, pauseless video and a male voice urging me to watch to the end. Apparently Obama has signed an executive order authorizing him to institute martial law and ?steal your food supply,? but ?Matt? has developed ?a weird but incredibly effective system? to survive the coming storm.

In the interests of journalism, I also checked out the ?1 Weird Secret That Pornstars Use to Get BIG DICKS.? Sure enough, this involved a dude talking at me while words flashed on the screen: ?Stay until the end of this video... it will shock you.? But before he spilled the beans on ?what?s holding you back from the big penis you deserve,? he needed to regale me with tales of his buddy Kyle, who added 2 inches and improved his confidence with the ladies.

Cancer agency criticism switches to Greg Abbott

Recent controversies at CPRIT may come back to haunt Attorney General Greg Abbott as he runs for governor.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott's oversight ? or lack thereof, as some are saying ? of the state's cancer agency has come into question now that he is running for governor.

Abbott has served on the governing board of the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, the state's $3 billion cancer agency, for four years and appointed a deputy to attend meetings for him. The appointee missed about a third of CPRIT's Oversight Committee meetings, the Houston Chronicle reports.

While criticism of Abbott's role with CPRIT is new, the agency has gone through a controversial year. Governing officials at CPRIT were blasted late last year after it was revealed an $11 million grant was awarded to Dallas-based Peloton Therapeutics Inc. without going through proper review channels.

As a result, a moratorium was placed on CPRIT grants in December, bringing the agency to a standstill. An investigation by Abbott's office subsequently followed. Only recently was the agency allowed to fulfill 25 researcher recruitment grants worth about $72 million.

Critics question Abbott's ability to objectively investigate the agency after it was discovered serious issues needed to be addressed when it was his office that oversaw CPRIT to begin with, the Chronicle reports.

Meanwhile, recent leadership changes could bolster public trust in the institute.

Pfizer to pay $491M to resolve drug marketing case

The U.S. Justice Department said Tuesday that drugmaker Pfizer Inc. will pay almost $491 million to resolve an investigation into illegal marketing of the organ transplant drug Rapamune by a company Pfizer later acquired.

Pfizer, the world's second-biggest drugmaker, had taken a charge to cover the settlement late last year, when it reached a tentative settlement to resolve lawsuits three whistleblowers had filed back in 2005 and 2007. The Justice Department and numerous other government agencies eventually joined in the probe and the lawsuits.

On Tuesday, New York-based Pfizer agreed to pay $257.4 million in civil settlements with federal and state governments and a $157.6 million criminal fine. Pfizer also will forfeit $76 million in assets.

The Justice Department said the drugmaker Wyeth, which Pfizer bought in October 2009, trained sales representatives to encourage doctors to prescribe Rapamune for uses other than preventing rejection of transplanted kidneys, even giving them bonuses for doing so.

Rapamune was approved in 1999, only for use in kidney transplant patients. Federal laws bar drugmakers from promoting drugs for uses not specifically approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

But the practice has previously been so rampant that there's a term for it ? off-label marketing ? and multiple law firms specialize in pursuing lawsuits over it. Nearly every big drugmaker, including Pfizer, has been prosecuted for it and eventually agreed to big settlements with the government and whistleblowers, who usually are drug store pharmacists or former pharmaceutical sales reps. The record settlement is $3 billion, paid by British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline PLC.

In the Rapamune case, whistleblower Mark Campbell, a Wyeth sales rep for 20 years until he resigned in 2009, alleged Wyeth promoted Rapamune for patients getting liver, lung, heart and other transplants ? potentially dangerous uses.

"I believe this settlement represents at least a small step towards insuring that pharmaceuticals are promoted in a manner which does not compromise patient safety," Campbell said in a statement.

Pfizer said In a statement that it "was not a subject or target of this matter, and cooperated fully with the government from the time it learned of this investigation in October 2009. That cooperation was acknowledged today by the Justice Department."

Campbell's lead attorney, Shelley Slade of Vogel, Slade & Goldstein, said the federal and state governments splitting the settlement from Wyeth are still working out how much of that money will go to the three whistleblowers, who worked together on the case. The other two, Marlene Sandler and Scott Paris, were represented by another law firm.

Pfizer shares fell 13 cents to $29.67 in trading Tuesday.

How to jailbreak an Apple TV 2

Compared to other media set-top boxes like the Roku, the Apple TV can appear somewhat limited. Out of the box it offers a limited number of channel apps and, unless you're invested in the Apple ecosystem, its AirPlay features are marginal at best. But the good news is you can get more content (a lot more), and additional functionality out of your Apple TV 2 with a simple jailbreak. It allows you to install popular apps like XBMC and get more streaming audio and video as well as live streaming channels.

    What you'll need

    Things to keep in mind

For this article I'm using an Apple TV 2 running the software version 5.3 (6105), and a PC running Windows 8. If you're on a Mac, no worries, the process is the same. Also, remember, this will not work with Apple TV 3, which is yet to succumb to jailbreaking more than a year after its release.

To check the version of software your Apple TV is running, go to Settings > General > About and there you'll see the software version. If you're running an older version, you can download the right version of Seas0npass for it.

    Jailbreak Apple TV 2

After you have everything ready, launch the Seas0nPass software on your computer and click the "Create IPSW" button.

Next you'll get a message to connect your Apple TV to your PC or Mac. Plug in the power cord and Micro USB cable then connect it to your computer. You don't need the HDMI or Ethernet cables connected ? just the power and Micro USB.

After you connect your Apple TV, grab the Apple TV remote, point it at your Apple TV and hold down the Menu and Play/Pause buttons simultaneously for seven seconds. This will put the Apple TV in Device Firmware Update (DFU) mode.

After you see the blue light on the front of the box start blinking rapidly, release the buttons and the Apple TV should be recognized by your computer. You'll get a message asking if you want to save the signatures. This is up to you. I usually don't because it errors out on my system for some reason, but you might have better luck.

After the signatures are saved, you'll see the following screen letting you know that the latest software is being downloaded and installed, which is 5.3 (10B809). This is exactly what you want, the jailbreak software and customized iPhone Software (IPSW). The amount of time this takes will vary depending on your internet connection. It took about 15 minutes to download and install on my DSL connection.

During the process you'll hear the "chime" sound while it disconnects and connects to USB.

After the jailbreak software is installed, iTunes will launch into Apple TV Recovery Mode and restore your Apple TV. You don't need to do anything at this point, just wait for iTunes to do its job. This can take around 10 minutes.

Success! When it's done you should see the following message that your Apple TV has been restored to factory settings with the custom IPSW. But, you're not quite done yet. Click OK to the success message then exit out of iTunes.

Now you'll be back at the Seas0nPass screen and told "Custom IPSW created successfully!" Click OK.

The final step is to boot your Apple TV tethered. So make sure the power cord and Micro USB cables are still connected. Grab the remote control again, point it at the Apple TV and hold down the Menu and Play/Pause buttons again for seven seconds to enter DFU mode. Now on your computer click the Tethered Boot button in Seas0nPass. A couple of screens will come up, but don't do anything.

After that you'll see that the tethered boot was completed, and you can now connect your HDMI cable to your HDTV. At this point remove the Micro USB cable, but not the power cord. If you remove the power cord, you'll need to connect it to your computer again and do the tethered boot.

Now on your HDTV you'll need to go through the initial set up process, just like when you first bought it. Select your language, connect it to your home network, and when you get to the screen asking if you want to send information to Apple, select "No Thanks."

You'll know the jailbreak was completely successful because you'll see a new FireCore logo where Settings used to be.

    Summing up

Jailbreaking your Apple TV 2 offers a plethora of new options and actually turns it into a completely new device. It allows you to install free media center software like XBMC or NitoTV. Or if you want to spend US$29.95, FireCore sells a media center product for it called aFlash TV (black). Those apps don't automatically install, and doing so gets pretty geeky. You need to use an SSH client (Putty is a good option for Windows users, while Mac users can use the Terminal.app included with OS X) and use a command line interface to tunnel in to the Apple TV.

For more, check out this XBMC Wiki page. The amount of channels and streaming content you can get is insane compared to what the Apple TV offers by default. You can also pull audio and video from network locations on your home network. Here's just a sample of what you can find after installing XBMC.

Once you have it jailbroken, I recommend not installing an update when Apple comes out with one. You'll just have to jailbreak your device again, and it might take a while for one to come out. Apple TV doesn't come with a Micro USB cable, but they are cheap and can be found on Amazon. Or if you have a lot of gadgets, you probably have one lying around somewhere.

This is a tethered jailbreak. Which means, you cannot simply just carry your Apple TV into another room and use it. If you do want to bring it into another room, you'll need to take along a laptop, connect it, and tether boot it again for it to work. While having it tethered is somewhat annoying, it works great if you keep your Apple TV in one room. Also, the jailbreak community is always hard at work creating untethered jailbreaks.

While jailbreaking an Apple TV 2 is pretty simple, it may not be quite as easy to get a hold of a second-gen Apple TV unit. This is because Apple no longer sells this model and there's still no jailbreak for the current Apple TV 3. As a result, second hand Apple TV 2's are in high demand and sell for around $200 on eBay and Amazon. If you already have an Apple TV 2 then there's little reason not to jailbreak, but you don't have one, you may be able to find a cheaper alternative that will offer many of the same capabilities.
