Yemen: Al-Qaida offers bounty for US ambassador

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? Al-Qaida's branch in Yemen has offered to pay tens of thousands of dollars to anyone who kills the U.S. ambassador in Sanaa or an American soldier in the country.

An audio produced by the group's media arm, the al-Malahem Foundation, and posted on militant websites Saturday said it offered three kilograms of gold, worth $160,000, for killing the ambassador.

The group said it will pay 5 million Yemeni riyals ($23,000) to anyone who kills an American soldier inside Yemen.

It said the offer is valid for six months.

The bounties were set to "inspire and encourage our Muslim nation for jihad," the statement said.

The U.S. Embassy in Sanaa did not respond to an Associated Press phone call asking for comment.

Washington considers al-Qaida in Yemen to be the group's most dangerous branch.

The group overran entire towns and villages last year by taking advantage of a security lapse during nationwide protests that eventually ousted the country's longtime ruler. Backed by the U.S. military experts based at a southern air base, Yemen's army was able to regain control of the southern region, but al-Qaida militants continue to launch deadly attacks on security forces that have killed hundreds.

In the capital, Sanaa, security officials said two gunmen on a motorbike shot and killed two intelligence officers early Sunday as they were leaving a downtown security facility. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity according to regulations, said all intelligence and security officers have been instructed to take precautionary measures outside working hours.

The government blames al-Qaida for the killing of several senior military and intelligence officials this year mainly by gunmen on motorbikes.

The officials said security authorities in Sanaa have launched a campaign against motorcyclists suspected of involvement in these attacks or other crimes, arresting about 200 for questioning for violations, including driving motorcycles without license plates.

You Can Lose It! | meizitang botanicalslimming

It can be daunting to think about losing weight, even if it is just a few pounds. In actuality, it isn?t as difficult as it seems. These weight loss tips will show you have to make the seemingly impossible, possible.

If you are attending an event or a party, eat a good sized meal before you get there. If you feel full, you are less likely to succumb to those fattening snacks being offered. Try drinking wine instead of high-calorie beer or mixed drinks.

Replace your serving of mayonnaise with mustard. Although it tastes good, even the smallest amount of mayonnaise is loaded with calories and fat. Try using mustard on your sandwich instead to cut down on calories. These are easy calories to cut from your diet and can be done simply by ordering or making foods without mayonnaise.

Tracking calories and eating healthy foods are the best ways to lose weight. Regular exercise and a healthy diet are needed to lose weight. When you take away all the gimmicks, dieting really comes down to burning more calories than one consumes.

Keep a log of your caloric intake. Go out and purchase and cheap spiral notebook or journal. Turn this notebook into a personalized food journal. Do not forget to include the amount of servings and calories from the food that you eat during the day. This can help you stay accountable for your eating habits and keep tabs on your diet overall.

When you feel the pangs of hunger, give yourself few minutes before you eat anything. You may feel hungry, but actually be thirsty or bored. When this happens, take a walk or drink some water. If you still feel hungry, then go ahead and eat something.

Keeping a food diary can help you reach your weight loss goals. It is not a necessity to count the calories. This is a good way to monitor how much food you eat everyday and when you eat it. You might eat more than you previously thought you did. Keeping up with the food you eat keeps you aware throughout the day. How guilty are you going to feel writing down the extra cookie?

Your body requires a certain amount of protein when losing weight, so look for low-fat, high-fiber sources like a three bean salad. You could create a low-calorie version easily at home. Open three cans of beans and lightly toss with a light Italian dressing. This a a great low calorie snack full of fiber that you can eat throughout the week.

If you plan your meals ahead, managing your weight loss goals will be much easier. Make a plan as to when you can eat your five or six small meals and pack them in a cooler so they are available when you need them.

Instead of making a goal weight, make a clothing size goal. Don?t be a slave to the scale. Each person carries their weight differently. Since everyone?s body is different, trying to hit a specific weight can cause needless anxiety. It is a better idea to concentrate on fitting into a particular clothing size.

Drinking ice water can help you on your weight loss journey. Introducing very cold water to your body will bring your core temperature down. Because your body is trying to recover the heat that it is losing, it will start burning fat. Replace all unhealthy drinks with water.

Avoiding weight gain while working at some jobs can be a tricky task. Many of today?s jobs involve a lot of sitting, which further promotes that sedentary lifestyle. Instead of delegating certain chores to an office assistant, take it upon yourself to get up and physically take care of it. Even this small amount of exercise will help you maintain a healthy weight.

It is proven that a bowl of cereal 5 times a week can help you to shed extra weight. Cereal gives you essential calcium as well as fiber that?s great for your heart. Although many cereals do not offer these types of healthful benefits, so avoid cereals like Cap?n Crunch and Fruit Loops. Look for cereals that are whole grain, high in fiber, and low in added sugar.

Put these ideas to work and start your weight loss program today. Don?t be discouraged if results do not arrive instantly; results will appear. Just keep moving, and continue to push toward your goals. You can lose weight, as long as you keep trying.

Instagram: No, We Didn't Just Lose 25% Of Our Users - Business ...

Instagram has responded to yesterday's odd report that it lost 25% of its active users.

"This data is inaccurate," an Instagram spokesperson told Sam Biddle at Gizmodo. "We continue to see strong and steady growth in both registered and active users of Instagram."

(A Facebook spokesperson told us the same thing.)

A minor kerfuffle kicked up when AppData showed Instagram's daily active users dropping sharply on Christmas day. AppData tracks usage through Facebook log-ins, so it's absolute numbers are useless, but its trends should be informative.

For some reason AppData told the New York Post that it thought the reason for the steep usage decline was Instagram's change in terms of service. On December 17, Instagram updated its terms of service with scary language that suggested it was going to take users' photos and sell them as advertising. Four days later, Instagram walked back that language.

It didn't make any sense to blame the terms of service controversy since it was a full week after it started that AppData showed a drop. It also didn't make sense to see a decline on Christmas since lots of people were taking pictures of their family, their new toys, photos of photos of themselves as little kids, and posting them to Instagram.

If anything, there seems to be something wrong with AppData's data. Robin Wauters at The Next Web notes that AppData data shows the same sort of steep drop for Pinterest, Spotify, Farmville 2, and many other apps, on Christmas day.

James Harden Deserves Legitmate Love for 2012-13 NBA MVP Award

James Harden deserves legitimate consideration for the 2012-13 NBA MVP award.

With 2013 just around the corner, many have begun to speculate which athlete is bound to become the league's Most Valuable Player. While the usual suspects have garnered their fair share of attention, there is an up-and-coming force to consider.

Harden.

As the leader of a 16-13 franchise, Harden may not be the first name that comes to mind. After all, the likes of Kevin Durant, LeBron James and Chris Paul are posting equally as impressive numbers and leading better teams.

With that being said, we cannot allow a win-loss record to entirely determine one's value.

Keep in mind, the Houston Rockets are the youngest team in the NBA. They're also an unexpected postseason contender due to this past offseason's massive roster overhaul.

Even with the star power of Harden and Jeremy Lin, very few expected the team to make a significant impact on the structure of the postseason standings.

Regardless of their external preseason expectations, Harden has elevated the Rockets to a level of consistency.

Eight of their 13 losses have come by single-digits. Two of their defeats have come in overtime.

The question is, what makes Harden any different from the others? Much like LeBron James in 2011-12, the key is adversity.

?

Brand New Squad

Not only has James Harden taken the NBA's youngest team to the brink of postseason legitimacy, but he's led a team that has limited familiarity with one another. Allow this number to prove that.

Eleven of the 15 players on the Houston Rockets' roster were not with the team in 2011-12.

The players returning from a season ago are Chandler Parsons, Patrick Patterson, Marcus Morris and Greg Smith. To put that into perspective, Smith and Morris played a combined 25 games in 2011-12.

Parsons was a rookie, and the oft-injured Patterson had been recovering from ankle surgery (via The Houston Chronicle). Patterson started just one game.

In other words, the Rockets have started from scratch.

Is James Harden an MVP Candidate?

Is James Harden an MVP Candidate?

  • No. He pales in comparison to others.

  • Yes. The numbers and the value are both there.

  • No. Harden deserves recognition, but not a candidate.

Houston lost five starters this offseason. As for how that is possible with Parsons returning, point guards Goran Dragic and Kyle Lowry both started in 2011-12 and found new homes for 2012-13.

Other starters lost include leading scorer Kevin Martin, locker room leader Luis Scola and starting center Samuel Dalembert.

Chase Budinger and Courtney Lee also signed elsewhere, which leaves Houston in an unparalleled predicament.?Their top six leading scorers all left town.

In fact, each of their statistical leaders from 2012 are now playing for another franchise.

Dalembert led the team in rebounds and blocks. Lowry was tops in assists and steals, while Martin took control in scoring.

Marcus Camby also started 13 games and led the team in rebounds, albeit unqualified for true consideration. He's now with the New York Knicks.

To make matters worse, they've replaced the previously-listed veterans with youth. Nothing but youth.

You can thank James Harden for overcoming this massive roster overhaul.

?

Individual Numbers

Like it or not, the MVP award has just as much to do with one's individual statistics as it does their impact. That could be where we draw the line with the award and it becomes the "Most Outstanding Player."

Fortunately for The Bearded One, he has the numbers to contend.

Thus far in 2012-13, Harden is averaging 26.1 points, 5.4 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists. He also has four double-doubles and 10 games with at least 30 points.

Most important of all, Harden is improving with each passing game. Specifically with his shot selection.

Entering December, Harden had posted a slash line of .426/.341/.831. With two games remaining in the final month of 2012, he sits at?.475/.410/.893 for December.

No matter how surprising they may be, these are numbers that Harden is capable of sustaining. It's all a matter of maintaining this approach from a shot selection standpoint.

Which brings us to his value to team success.

?

With and Without

With James Harden on the floor, the Houston Rockets are posting per 48 averages of 105.5 points for and 101.8 points against. Although they're struggling defensively, the Rockets are outscoring their opponent with Harden active.

The self-explanatory key to a victory.

When Harden is on the bench, however, the Rockets are averaging 101.4 points scored and 102.9 points allowed per 48. In other words, the Rockets are creating a formula for defeat when Harden is resting.

What more evidence do you need?

As it presently stands, the Rockets are 16-13 with a slight edge over the Denver Nuggets for sixth in the Western Conference. One can only imagine where the team would be without Harden, who has proven to be the star and glue guy.

Harden has the outstanding statistics to prove his individual greatness and team-specific value. What more will it take for him to receive MVP consideration?

Ask Professor Pedagogy - Center for Teaching - Vanderbilt University

Ask Professor Pedagogy is a twice monthly advice column written by Center for Teaching staff. One aspect of our mission is to cultivate dialogue about teaching and learning, so we welcome questions and concerns that arise in the classroom; particularly those from Vanderbilt faculty, students, and staff. If you have a question that you?d like Professor P to address, please send it to us.

Dear Professor Pedagogy,

I am looking for new, innovative ways of engaging my students with the local history and culture of the city.? As an instructor, I believe that using local, relevant resources for teaching makes the learning for my students more authentic and effective.? However, getting outside the classroom in a structured way seems so daunting and difficult to manage.? Do you have any ideas on how I might get my students engaged in learning about the local history of the community in which our university is located?? Are there ways of leveraging technology, too?? How can I assess that they have learned something if I have them moving around outside the classroom, and can?t be with them at all times?

Thank you for your response,
Learning on the Move

?

Dear Learning on the Move,

I applaud your efforts in thinking how learning could occur outside the four walls of the classroom, and wanting your students to engage with the local context in which they are both living and learning.? Moving outside the ?classroom as container? paradigm (Leander, et al., 2010) can be scary; there seem to be so many unknowns and variables to control.? However, other models of learning (e.g., apprenticeship models) show us that teaching and learning can happen in a variety of different ways that don?t resemble the traditional classroom model (e.g., Lave & Wenger, 1991).? Here, learning occurs within authentic activity, at the elbow of a more knowledge other (Hall & Greeno, 2008), and in spaces that necessitate moving and coordinating bodies (e.g., Hutchins, 1995).? This description is a stark contrast to our traditional image of a student sitting in a chair, legs under a desk, looking at a screen.? All this to say, move forward with your ideas of re-imagining university teaching and learning!? Feel good about yourself for problematizing the lecture-style model and engaging minds within bodies in places bustling with activity and history!

So here?s my idea:? Starting with your objectives of getting your students out of the classroom, learning about the history and culture of the community, providing some structure, and perhaps introducing them to new technologies, you could do a geocache!? Yes, you heard me, a geocache.? If you don?t know what a geocache is, you might want to first visit this website for some very basic information.? Now, I don?t know the exact content area or discipline from which you teach, but connecting your big, disciplinary ideas to the resources of the community through a geocache could be an effective structured way of teaching som ?e material ?on the move.?

First, think carefully about the learning objectives you have in mind.? Then, do you want your students moving around an area of the community that is walkable?? Do you want them navigating the transit system?? What specific locations will afford your students with new information, and why is it important to actually be in that place?? Will they be in groups?? Will each group member have a particular task?? Do you want to use GPS (global positioning system) technology on smart phones or on devices?? Would you prefer them to use paper maps?? What do you want your students to produce, or bring back with them from this activity?

Once you have answered these questions for yourself, you might:

  • Place some ?tasks? around the area in which you want your students to engage.? Tasks could be typed-out on slips of paper, rolled-up in tubes and located in hard-to-see spots.? The tasks could ask your students to do a variety of things, but make sure that the task is location-specific or relevant to actually being in that spot.? Otherwise, the effort of getting to that particular location will seem for naught.
  • Ask students take a picture of the location, do a rubbing of an engraving with trace paper and charcoals, and/or do some written reflection in that place.

Let?s say you have five tasks to which you want groups of students to navigate and complete ? one could be a kind of written assignment, two could be more problem-solving tasks, one could be a group interpretation of the meaning of a place, and one could be a simple photo proving that they had arrived and noticed something noteworthy about the location.? You might find that the variety of ?task types? will differently engage your students and provide new ways of learning the material.? For some of your students, it will be the navigation and finding the cache that gets them most excited (especially if you have introduced this activity as a race or competition).

In response to your question regarding assessment, you should think carefully about how you debrief this activity in conversation with your students.? Maybe you want each group to share particular artifacts that they have either created or found at locations.? Perhaps you want students to discuss how each location and task relates to bigger disciplinary ideas that are important for the course.? Maybe you want students to do an individual, follow-up assignment at home that synthesize some of the major points you were hoping to get across via a geocache.? Regardless, make sure you do some kind of debrief or wrap-up so you can assess both what your students learned, and how well this activity went for your own pedagogical objectives and toolkit.

Good luck and have fun!

Professor Pedagogy

Look Up! 13 Must-See Stargazing Events in 2013

As 2012 comes to a close, some might wonder what is looming sky-wise for 2013.What celestial events might we look forward to seeing??

I?ve selected what I consider the top 13"skylights" (get it?) for the coming year, and have listed them in chronological order. Not all these night sky events will be visible from any one locality (you may have to travel to catch all the eclipses), but you can observe many of them from the comfort of your backyard, weather permitting.

The next year also promises two potentially bright comets: PANSTARRS and ISON. As any astronomer can tell you, comets are notoriously capricious; we can only guess at how bright they will get and how long their respective tails will be. We?ll just have to wait and see.

In general, 2013 promises an action-packed 12 months for stargazers. Hopefully, your local weather will cooperate on most, if not all of these dates. The following list below includes some of the most promising night sky events of the upcoming year!?[100 Best Space Photos of 2012]

Jan. 21: Very Close Moon/Jupiter Conjunction

For North Americans, this is a real head-turner, one easily visible even from brightly lit cities. A waxing gibbous moon, 78-percent illuminated, will pass within less than a degree to the south of Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system. (For reference, your closed fist held out at arm's length covers 10 degrees of the sky.)

These two bright luminaries will make their closest approach high in the evening sky for all to see. What?s even more interesting is that this will be the closest moon-Jupiter conjunction until the year 2026! [Amazing Photos: Jupiter and the Moon]

Feb. 2 to 23: Best Evening View of Mercury

Mercury, the "elusive" innermost planet, will travel far enough from the glare of the sun to be readily visible in the western sky, soon after sunset. On the evening of Feb. 8, Mercury will skim within less than 0.4 degrees of the much-fainter planet, Mars.?

Mercury will arrive at its greatest elongation from the sun on Feb.16. It will be quite bright (-1.2 to -0.6 magnitude) before this date and will fade rapidly to +1.2 magnitude thereafter.(Astronomers measure the brightness of sky objects using magnitude, a reverse scale in which lower numbers correspond to brighter objects. Negative magnitudes denote exceptional brightness.)

March 10 to 24: Comet PANSTARRS at Its Best!?

Comet PANSTARRS, discovered in June 2011 using the Pan-STARRS 1 Telescope at Haleakala, Hawaii, is expected to put on its best show during this two-week period. During this time, the comet will also be near its closest approaches to the sun (28 million miles, or 45 million kilometers) and Earth (102 million miles, or 164 million km).

While Comet PANSTARRS was a very dim and distant object at the time of its discovery, it has brightened steadily since then. It still appears on target to reach at least first magnitude and should be visible low in the west-northwest sky shortly after sunset. On the evening of March 12, the comet will be situated 4 degrees to the right of an exceedingly thin crescent moon.

April 25: Partial Lunar Eclipse

This will be a very minor partial lunar eclipse, with the moon's uppermost limb merely grazing the Earth's dark, umbral shadow. At mid-eclipse, less than 2 percent of the moon's diameter will be inside the dark shadow. The Eastern Hemisphere (Europe, Africa, Australia and most of Asia) will have the best view.

This lunar eclipse will not be visible from North America.

May 9: Annular Eclipse of the Sun

During annular solar eclipse?(also known as a "Ring of Fire" eclipse), the long, umbral shadow cone of the moon is too short to reach the Earth. In angular size, the moon's disk appears about 4.5 percent smaller than the disk of the sun. So, the effect is like placing a penny atop a nickel: a ring of sunlight remains visible surrounding the moon.?

The shadow path from where the ring can be seen runs for thousands of miles, but will get no wider than 107 miles (172 km) at the point of greatest eclipse. Much of the path falls over the Pacific Ocean, but at or soon after local sunrise, it will slice across a part of northern Australia (where it will be the morning of May 10) and the extreme eastern tip of Papua New Guinea, along with some of the nearby Solomon Islands.?

At the point of greatest eclipse, the ring phase will last 6 minutes, 4 seconds. Hawaiians will see a partial eclipse when, at 3:48 p.m. Hawaii time, the moon will obscure about 32 percent of the sun's disk.

May 24 to 30: Dance of the Planets

Mercury, Venus and Jupiter will provide a fascinating show low in the west-northwest twilight sky soon after sunset. They will seemingly shuffle around each other, changing their positions noticeably from one evening to the next. The two brightest planets, Venus and Jupiter, will be separated by just over 1 degree on May 28, with Venus passing to the northwest (upper right) of Jupiter and shining more than six times brighter than Jupiter.

June 23: Biggest Full Moon of 2013

On June 23, the moon turns full at 7:32 a.m. EDT(1132 GMT),and just 32 minutes earlier it will arrive at its closest point to the Earth in 2013 at a distance of 221,824 miles (356,991 km), making it a so-called supermoon.Expect a large range in ocean tides (exceptionally low to exceptionally high) for?the next few days.?

Aug. 12: The Perseid Meteor Shower

The annual Perseid meteor shower?is considered among the best of the annual displays thanks to its high rates of up to 90-meteors-per-hour for a single observer, as well as its reliability. The shower is beloved by summer campers and often discovered by city dwellers who might be spending time in the country under dark, starry skies.?

This past summer, the moon was a fat waning crescent and presented a minor nuisance during the meteor shower. But in 2013, the moon will be a couple of days before first quarter and will set during the evening hours, leaving the rest of the night dark for prospective observers.

Oct. 18: Penumbral Eclipse of the Moon

The moon?slides through the northern part of the Earth's penumbral shadow during this lunar eclipse event.

At mid-eclipse, 76 percent of the moon's diameter will be immersed in the penumbra, probably deep enough to cause a faint, yet discernible darkening of the moon's lower limb. The region of visibility includes much of Asia, Europe and Africa. The central and eastern portion of North America will get a view of the slightly darkened Hunters' Moon during the early evening hours.

Nov. 3: Hybrid Eclipse of the Sun

This is a rather unusual solar eclipse in that, along its track, which runs for 8,450 miles (13,600 km) across the Earth's surface, the eclipse quickly morphs from annular to total; it is therefore known to astronomers as a "hybrid eclipse."

Truth be told, along most of the track, the eclipse appears as a total, with a very thin annulus (or ring) of sunlight visible near the very beginning of the track. The track of the central line of this eclipse begins in the Atlantic about 545 miles (875 km)southwest of Bermuda. So, along North America's Atlantic Coast, interested viewers (using proper viewing devices, such as pinhole projection or #14 welders glass) will only see the dark disk of the moon exiting the sun's face at sunrise.

The eclipse track will pass south of the Cape Verde Islands, then curve southeastward parallel to the African coastline. The greatest eclipse, with 100 seconds of totality and the path width reaching a maximum of just 36 miles (58 km), occurs approximately 250 miles (402 km) off the coast of Liberia. The shadow track will then sweep across central Africa, passing over sections of Gabon, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda and Kenya, before ending at sunset at the Ethiopia-Somalia border.??

Mid-November Through December: Comet ISON

On Sep. 21, 2012, two amateur astronomers (Vitali Nevski of Belarus and Artyom Novichonok of Russia)used a telescope owned by the International Scientific Optical Network to discover a new comet that was christened using the acronym of the instrument used to find it: Comet ISON.

Orbital calculations indicate that comet ISON will travel closest to the sun, less than 750,000 miles (1.2 million km) above the sun's surface, making it a true "sungrazer," on Nov. 28 (Thanksgiving Day in the United States).

The comet could eventually be bright enough to be visible in broad daylight around the time of its nearest approach to the sun. It will then travel toward Earth, passing within 40 million miles (64 million km) of our planet a month later.

Since comet ISON will become very well placed for viewing in the morning and evening sky from the Northern Hemisphere during the following weeks, it could become one of the most watched comets of all time.?

December (all month): Dazzling Venus

Venus, the brightest of all the planets, puts on a holiday show all month long, and what a spectacular one it is! Venus is the showiest it will be for all of 2013 and 2014 either in the evening or morning sky. It adorns the southwestern evening sky as much as three hours after sundown at the beginning of the month, and 1.5 hours after sundown by New Year's Eve. A lovely, crescent moon passes well above and to the right of the planeton Dec. 5, and the next night Venus will reach the pinnacle of its brilliance; Venus won?t be as bright an "evening star" again until 2021.?

Dec. 13 to 14: Geminid Meteor Shower

If there is one meteor display guaranteed to put on a very entertaining show, it is the Geminid meteor shower. Most meteor experts now place it at the top of the list, as it surpasses in brilliance and reliability even August's Perseids.?

Unfortunately, in 2013, the moon will be several days before full phase and will light up the sky for much of the night, hiding many of the fainter meteors. But around 4:30 a.m. (your local time), the moon will have finally set, leaving the sky completely dark for about an hour. That will be your chance to make as many as two meteor sightings per minute, or 120 per hour!

So stargazers mark your calendars: 2013 promises to be a great year for skywatching, and if you take an impressive photo of the night sky, let us know!

Man pushed to death in front of NYC subway train

NEW YORK (AP) ? A mumbling woman pushed a man to his death in front of a subway train on Thursday night, the second time this month someone has been killed in such nightmarish fashion, police said.

The man was standing on the elevated platform of a 7 train in Queens at about 8 p.m. when he was shoved by the woman, who witnesses said had been following him closely and mumbling to herself, New York Police Department chief spokesman Paul Browne said. When the train pulled into the tracks, the woman got up from a nearby bench and shoved the man down, he said. The man had been standing with his back to her.

It didn't appear the man noticed her before he was shoved onto the tracks, police said. The condition of the man's body was making it difficult to identify him, police said.

The woman fled, and police were searching for her. She was described as Hispanic, in her 20s, heavyset and about 5-foot-5, wearing a blue, white and gray ski jacket and Nike sneakers with gray on top and red on the bottom.

It was unclear if the man and the woman knew each other or if anyone tried to help the man up before he was struck by the train and killed. There was no video of the incident at the station on Queens Boulevard in the Sunnyside neighborhood. Detectives canvassed the neighborhood for useable video.

On Dec. 3, 58-year-old Ki-Suck Han was shoved in front of a train in Times Square. A photograph of him on the tracks a split second before he was killed was published on the front of the New York Post the next day, causing an uproar and debate over whether the photographer, who had been waiting for a train, should have tried to help him and whether the newspaper should have run the image. Apparently no one else tried to help up Han, either.

A homeless man, 30-year-old Naeem Davis, was charged with murder in Han's death and was ordered held without bail. He has pleaded not guilty and has said that Han was the aggressor and had attacked him first. The two men hadn't met before.

Service was suspended Thursday night on the 7 train line, which connects Manhattan and Queens, and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority was using buses to shuttle riders while police investigated.

Being pushed onto the train tracks is a silent fear for many of the commuters who ride the city's subway a total of more than 5.2 million times on an average weekday, but deaths are rare. Among the more high-profile cases was the January 1999 death of aspiring screenwriter Kendra Webdale, who was shoved by a former mental patient. After that, the state Legislature passed Kendra's Law, which lets mental health authorities supervise patients who live outside institutions to make sure they are taking their medications and aren't threats to safety.

In 2012, we turned to Wikipedia to learn about ... Facebook?

12 hrs.

Unlike most major Internet brands, Wikipedia had no year-end top-10 list to share. But that's not to say there isn't a list of most viewed Wikipedia articles of 2012. It took a software engineer with a bit of spare time to gather up the data, and share the results, equal parts predictable and off-the-wall.?What does this list say about us?

Based on?Johan Gunnarsson's analysis of Wikipedia logs, it seems that?the most viewed articles on the English version of Wikipedia are lined up as follows:

  • 1. Facebook - 32,647,942 views
  • 2.?Wiki -?29,613,759?views
  • 3.?Deaths in 2012 -?25,418,587?views
  • 4.?One Direction -?22,351,637?views
  • 5.?The Avengers (2012 film) -?22,268,644?views
  • 6.?Fifty Shades of Grey -?21,779,423?views
  • 7.?2012 phenomenon -?20,619,920?views
  • 8.?The Dark Knight Rises -?18,882,885?views
  • 9.?Google -?18,508,719?views
  • 10.?The Hunger Games -?18,431,626?views

While we're not surprised to see iconic pop culture phenomena like musical sensation One Direction, the all-star movie?"The?Avengers," the risque literary?trilogy "Fifty Shades of Grey" and of course the?inescapable "Hunger Games" series?appear,?we did scratch our heads about Facebook and Google, and ... "Wiki"?

Wikimedia spokesman Jay Walsh explained the popularity of these items to All Things D's Liz Gannes as likely being due to users who might type "Facebook" or similar into a search engine built into "their browsers intending to go to the site and end up on Wikipedia."?Either that, he says, or there's simply "general, high-level interest and curiosity" about the history of some of these websites and services.

We'll buy the accidental typing explanation over the "high-level of?interest" one.

While most of the top 100 most-viewed?English Wikipedia articles centered around pop culture and current events, some articles raise eyebrows for feeling a bit out of place. Entries on the Illuminati (No. 33), elocution (No. 34)?and g-forces (No. 83)?cropped up on the heels of expected entries like Mitt Romney (No. 22) and?Justin Bieber (No. 25).

The more immature individuals among us may find it amusing that entries on sex (No. 18) and human penis size (No. 82) made it into the list of 100?most viewed.?Android fanboys may flaunt the fact that an article about the mobile operating system hit the list at No. 70, while no entries about iOS made it into the top 100. (Though Steve Jobs did come in at No. 64.)

At least some people were using Wikipedia for its intended purpose, to cheat on homework assignments: Historical topics from?Albert Einstein (No. 98)?to the Hatfield-McCoy feud (No. 91) pepper the list.

When looking at the?most viewed articles in languages other than English, we find that the obsession with major Web properties and pop culture extends beyond their idiom of origin. Facebook led the Spanish top 10, which also includes One Direction. German language readers were particularly interested in the?TV shows "How I Met Your Mother," "The Big Bang Theory," "Two And A Half Men," and "Game Of Thrones" ? all which made it into their top 10.

And speaking of Bieber,?those with an irrational dislike for the teen?heartthrob may find it comforting to know that he?only made the top 10 in Norwegian and Danish. He failed to reach single digits in any other language, and sits at No. 25 on the list of the most viewed English Wikipedia articles.

"Gangnam Style," the ear-worm that beat Bieber's "Baby" to?a billion views on YouTube, appears to have only made it onto one top-100 list?? the English one ? taking the No. 21 spot with a mere?13,129,876 views.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

(AP) ? Authorities arrested the husband of a slain suburban Milwaukee police officer who was shot dead on Christmas Eve while out on patrol.

Ben Gabriel Sebena, of Menomonee Falls, was booked into Milwaukee County Jail on Wednesday on a preliminary charge of first-degree intentional homicide in the death of his wife, Jennifer Sebena, the Wauwatosa police department said.

It wasn't immediately clear if Ben Sebena had a lawyer. Kent Lovern, an assistant district attorney, said he didn't know if anyone was representing Sebena yet or whether Sebena would be formally charged later Thursday.

Authorities have released few details about Jennifer Sebena's killing, but said the Wauwatosa police officer was patrolling alone on the night she was killed. Officers found her body early Monday after she failed to respond to radio calls. She had been shot several times.

Jennifer Sebena, 30, had worked for the department for two years, and she is the first officer killed on active duty in the 96-year history of the department. Wauwatosa is a city of about 46,000 people just west of Milwaukee.

Her husband, also 30, is a decorated U.S. Marine veteran who served two tours in Iraq before suffering severe arm and leg injuries in a mortar attack in 2005.

Ben Sebena was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps as a corporal in 2005. Among his 10 medals and commendations were a Purple Heart, a Good Conduct medal and a badge as a rifle expert.

In a 10-minute video filmed for his church group in 2010, he described the mortar attack as well as his blossoming online courtship with Jennifer, whom he knew from high school.

"Our love flourished. We became actually infatuated with each other," he said in the video for Elmbrook Church in nearby Brookfield. His identity in the video was confirmed to The Associated Press by Elmbrook Pastor Scott Arbeiter.

Arbeiter said the church holds an annual men's conference in which organizers feature the stories of certain individuals. Ben Sebena talked about his transformation from a troubled teen to a Marine Corps veteran who rediscovered his faith in God. He eventually went on to counsel other troubled veterans.

Arbeiter, who said the Sebenas hadn't been active in the church for about a year, said the Elmbrook family was grieving along with the victim's family.

"None of this is news anyone wants to hear," he said. "This is tragic on so many different levels."

Jennifer Sebena's funeral is scheduled for Saturday.

H5N1: CIDRAP: News scan for December 27

Via CIDRAP:?NEWS SCAN: Pertussis peak in Minnesota, cholera in Cuba. Excerpt:
A cholera outbreak in the Cuban capital of Havana may be related to flooding that occurred in eastern Cuba as a result of Hurricane Sandy in late October, according to a recent story from the Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR), an international not-for-profit group that focuses on issues in crisis-racked regions.?
A doctor who requested anonymity said 47 cases have been identified in Habana Vieja (Old Havana), a tourist area in the city center, and that 33 of the cases originated in the hurricane-hit areas.?
Authorities have responded to the outbreak by setting up special hospital wards, cleaning up streets and buildings in parts of Habana Vieja, and distributing medications to prevent dehydration, the story said.?
Meanwhile, in Holguin province in eastern Cuba, officials said Vladimir Lenis Hospital is admitting three to five new cholera patients daily.
This is one of those cases where the news is the absence of news. The IWPR report is a rehash of posts like this one on Hablemos Press, and now it's recycled again. But no one seems to be taking an interest in confirming a story going back to last summer?certainly not the official Cuban media, and not WHO, and even the Cuban exile media aren't talking much about it. Nor are the media of other Caribbean countries showing any interest.?

But there are certainly a lot of foreign correspondents in Cuba, and you'd expect at least one or two would be willing to risk being kicked out of the country if they could get something solid on the cholera story. Apparently not.

Aetna CEO: Obamacare Could Double Insurance Premiums ...

Nice job, Barack.

Via CNBC:

To provide all Americans with health insurance, premiums will have to rise to pay for it,?Aetna?CEO Mark Bertolini told CNBC?s??Closing Bell??on Wednesday.

?If we?re going to insure all Americans, which is a worthy and appropriate cause, then somebody has to pay for it,? Bertolini said of the expected premium increases under Obamacare.

Bertolini said that insurance premiums could double in some places just on the basis of what types of policies people buy today.

He also said that when Obamacare is fully implemented, it won?t start the way people had hoped and it won?t be cheaper.

Over the longer run, the key to bringing down premiums will be controlling health care costs, he added. ?It?ll be fits and starts, but we?ll get there,? Bertolini said.

Higher premiums also will not necessarily mean higher margins for Aetna. ?The people coming into the system will be sicker because they have not used services,? Bertolini said. ?So in the initial part of this program it will cost more to take care of people because they have been going without health care for so long.?

The Aetna executive also weighed in on the debate over the country?s fiscal situation.

CashNetUSA | Where Health Insurance is Going - CashNetUSA

Where Health Insurance is Going by Max JaffeHealth costs are increasing at more than double that of general inflation. One single major medical expense could destroy a person financially; health insurance is a necessity to prevent financial catastrophe, as we are all only one step away from a major medical event. Simply braking a leg translates into thousands of dollars in medical expenses.

Rising medical expenses translate into rising costs for health insurance, both at the group level and the individual level. While most employers offer health insurance to their employees, the rising premium costs mean those higher premium costs are being passed along to employees, as the employee share of insurance has increased significantly over the last decade.

Staying Healthy

As Benjamin Franklin once said, ?An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.? Research has proven that proper diet and exercise can keep you out of the doctor?s office. Both will not only keep you in good physical shape but will also allow you to be more productive, which could mean a larger bonus or that raise you?ve been wanting.

Many employers offer wellness programs; there are sometimes monetary incentives for participating, such as a free gym membership. If anything, the right foods can make you think better, and proper exercise can relieve stress. Both will keep you healthy and away from the doctor, thereby lowering your out-of-pocket medical expenses.

Bringing Consumerism to Health Care

One way of keeping medical expenses down is to shop for health care not unlike the way we shop for consumables, such as plasma TV?s or shoes. That includes shopping for health insurance. If you are healthy, whether it be the result of participating in a wellness program or not, you might want to consider a high-deductible insurance plan. A high deductible plan will mean lower premiums; however, it will obviously take you longer to reach the total premium, at which time the insurance company begins to pay your health care expenses.

If you normally stay out of the doctor?s office, then a high deductible plan may be just the thing for you. That way you pay more when you go to the doctor but pay a whole lot less every month for your premium. You have to consider what might be best according to your situation.

In order for a health insurance plan to qualify as a high deductible plan, the deductible must be at least $1,200 for individual coverage and $2,400 for family coverage. Under the Affordable Care Act, a high-deductible plan must offer free preventive care before you meet the deductible.

It?s important to maintain a liquid account for the amount of the deductible in case you get sick. You don?t want to go into debt in order to cover your deductible.

Opening Health Savings Accounts (HSA?s)

If you?re enrolled in a high-deductible health plan, as noted above, you?re eligible to participate in an HSA. As a matter of fact, you cannot contribute to an HSA unless you?re covered by a high-deductible plan. Like Flexible Savings Accounts (FSA?s), an HSA allows you to contribute pre-tax dollars; as long as the money is spent for health care (other than premiums) the money will be tax-free.

Unlike FSA?s, you won?t lose it if you don?t spend it. Also unlike FSA?s, the money is portable, even if your employer contributes into your account. You can even use the money (as long as it?s for a medical expense) in retirement if you wish.

Health insurance is not what it used to be. Gone are the days where your employer pays the entire premium, you go to the doctor at the slightest onset of feeling bad, and pay a $25 co-pay. We now need to think of paying for health care in the same way we think about paying for anything else we consume.

The Science of the Next 150 Years

Cover Image: January 2013 Scientific American MagazineSee Inside

Scientific American asked leading scientists and science writers to look forward to what the world will be like in the years 2063, 2113 and 2163 and tell us what role science and technology will play in our future

Image: Tavis Coburn

What scientific and technological milestones can we envision 50, 100 and 150 years hence?

Each month we have the luxury of being able to look back into the past, to what people were writing 50, 100 and 150 years ago. We can do this because Scientific American has put its readers at the forefront of science and technology for more than 167 years. To mention just one example, our October 1962 issue featured Francis Crick, co-discoverer of the structure of DNA, explaining the meaning of this wondrous molecule, and psychologist Leon Festinger writing on what he meant by the term ?cognitive dissonance.?

A strong past is a good foundation from which to look into the future. In that spirit, we asked our authors to train their imaginations on what the world might look like 50, 100 and 150 years from now. Will cars fly? Will we still have computers, and if so, what will they do? Will nuclear weapons be banished? Will our technology save us from a changing climate or make things worse? What is the fate of tigers and other wild creatures on an increasingly crowded planet? To what extent will we master our genes to stave off disease? And if we ever leave this planet, how will the journey change us? In the following pages, you will find answers. Not the answers?we are not making predictions but rather doing thought experiments, grounded in science fact, with an eye to illuminating today's world and provoking thought about what comes next.

Found a home in a neighborhood I really like. The home is not on the water but close-by neighbors are and it is in a flood zone. As a first time homebuyer, I'm not really sure what to expect for prices of flood and homeowners insurance. People with experience, how much are you paying for flood and/or homeowners insurance and what is the value of your home(ballpark)?

Overall it's really inexpensive, because it's a government sponsored program backed mostly with taxpayer dollars.....In short, if you get flooded out the US taxpayers pay for most of your losses and rebuilding expenses.....

See if an elevation survey will get you out of the flood zone. Personally, I'd never buy a home where I'd have to buy flood insurance. The value of the home will dictate the premium. You're looking at about 500-600 a year for a 400,000 home- every year. And most people don't want to desk with it either so down goes your resale value.

I live on the water...not the ocean, but the ICW. We are considered a flood risk. Our flood insurance is 1300 bucks a year....steep, I know. But its the price I'm willing to pay, for what is to me, paradise.

NJ Insurance agent here... Flood insurance premium is based on multiple factors, not just value of the home. The base flood elevation of the area is a big factor. Is the house elevated or is it on a slab? Is there a finished basement? Is that where the mechanicals are?

As an example, I have a client that bought a rinky dink cape cod home on a slab. He was playing around $1800 a year for flood insurance. He then knoced the house down and put up a beautiful 4000 sq foot home, but it was elevated with "smart vents" underneath it. His flood insurance dropped to under $600 for the year.

You need to get an elevation certificate (or its possible the prior owners have one, hopefully not too old) to get the proper rate. As one poster mentioned earlier, your home may be one rate, but your neighbor is different.

BTW, flood isnurance maxes out at $250,000 for the dwelling. If you are buying an expensive home, please get an "excess" flood policy on top of that.

Rates are set by the government. You need to find out what zone the property is located in. __________________

Found a home in a neighborhood I really like. The home is not on the water but close-by neighbors are and it is in a flood zone. As a first time homebuyer, I'm not really sure what to expect for prices of flood and homeowners insurance. People with experience, how much are you paying for flood and/or homeowners insurance and what is the value of your home(ballpark)?

zones B and A require mandatory federal flood insurance and the max amount you can get for the structure is 250K

Thanks everyone. The house is in a community with a boat ramp and a bunch of houses on the water. It's in Tampa FL and the houses I am looking at are 125-180k. Any guesses what I would spend for insurance?

What he said. I am in insurance also. Based on the elevation cert you could be looking at 400/year or 4000 a year if its below grade, or "submit for rate". There is alot more involved than just " I am in flood zone AE, how much is the cost?" __________________

trailer or house?
Your only option might be Citizens Insurance , the state run insurance
Hard to find anyone that will insure a home in Florida within 5 miles of the beach , or at least central east florida

This is the correct answer. You can ask the current homeowner what his flood policy runs for a good idea what it will cost.

BTW. ALL HOMES ARE IN A FLOOD ZONE its just some flood zones your required to buy flood ins. to obtain a loan.
